In the middle of March 2023, Ethiopia hosted the first TLM Global Research Workshop.
\nResearch teams from TLMT India and TLM Nepal participated in person and TLM Bangladesh
\n(online) has participated. Staff members involved or interested in research from TLM Nigeria,
\nTLM DR Congo, TLM Mozambique, and TLM Ethiopia also participated in the workshop, with
\na view to increase their capacity in research. The workshop was held in Addis Ababa
\nintentionally, as Ethiopia has great potential to become a leprosy research center that could
\npotentially serve all of Africa. The workshops had three goals:
\n1. To get to know each other
\n2. To understand each other\u2019s work and expertise;
\n3. To become a community of TLM researchers.
\nThe programme had three main sections: 1) Presentations from the countries on their past,
\npresent research, and future direction and aspirations. 2) Honest conversations about what it
\nmeans to be a TLM research community and how we can best work together. 3) Global research
\npriorities and how they interact with TLM researchers\u2019 skills and interests. Following the country
\npresentations, a number of in-depth discussions with researchers from other nations were held
\nabout the research agendas of the various nations, various aspects of ongoing studies, as well as
\nwhat was feasible for each nation.
\nA perhaps more concrete example is the discussion of the following four communities of
\npractice, which were formed as a result of the countries' own research capacities and skills and
\nthe global research priorities: 1) Laboratory Research (including environmental transmission and
\ndiagnostics), 2) Clinical Research (including reactions and neuropathy), 3) Public Health
\n(including prophylaxis, active case finding, health systems strengthening & sustainability, and
\ndata), 4) Emancipatory Research.
\nParticipants also visited ALERT Hospital and AHRI (Armauer Hansen Research Institute) in
\nAddis. The AHRI team had prepared a series of presentations explaining their leprosy work,
\nwhich was followed by a discussion and exchange of ideas and talks with TLM researchers. The
\ndiscussions naturally led to conversations on potential research collaboration and partnerships.
\nThis workshop session helped a lot in networking, understanding the work done in different
\nTLM organizations, and learning more about different sorts of research done.<\/p>\n
